Liver Transplant Service for Bile Duct Cancer (Oct 2025)

Liver Transplantation for Bile Duct Cancer

From this month, liver transplantation will be available to a small proportion of people who are diagnosed with bile duct cancer. The medical term for bile duct cancer is cholangiocarcinoma, or CCA for short.

Even though the risk is low, the risk of developing CCA is higher for someone with PSC than it is for the average person. However, it is a major concern for people with PSC as it is hard to treat if not detected early enough.

PSC Support has been working with NHSBT (the body that oversees transplantation in the UK) to help set up this service since 2021.

While a liver transplant will not be suitable for everyone with CCA and PSC, it is a positive step forward and widens potential treatment options for patients with this very serious complication.
