Maja’s Story: From an Unexpected Diagnosis to a Life-Saving Transplant

After a routine dentist visit led to an unexpected diagnosis, Maja shares the journey through PSC and cirrhosis to receiving a new liver and embracing a fresh start.

An Accidental Discovery and Diagnosis

MHM20260917

My PSC diagnosis came completely by chance. In 2019, when I was 35, my dentist suggested that I have my thyroid checked, as she thought it might be enlarged. My GP then sent me for blood tests and included some additional liver-related parameters as well, just to get a general picture of my health. My thyroid was fine, but my liver enzymes were unexpectedly high.

It took some time to complete all the necessary tests, and in 2020 I was diagnosed with PSC. In 2022, during an ERCP, I was told that my condition had progressed to cirrhosis and that my liver was unlikely to last more than five years.

Progression, Assessment, and the Waiting List

Based on my results and after discussions with my gastroenterology team, we decided that I would undergo a full pre-transplant assessment in spring 2025 so that I could be placed on the transplant waiting list. I was officially on the waiting list from August 2025, and I received my new liver in July 2026.

I just celebrated the first two months of my new life.

Finding Strength and Acceptance

PSC changed my life in ways I had to learn to live with, but over time I learned to accept the uncertainty that came with it. That changed when I was told that I would eventually need a liver transplant.

At first, I struggled with the idea of it. Now, two months after my transplant, I already feel better than I did before - even everyday things feel easier, and I can do so much more with less effort.

A New Life and Deep Gratitude

I’m very grateful for the chance to move forward with my life. I’m grateful to my silent hero, the person whose gift made this possible, as well as to my surgeon, the medical and post-operative teams, everyone at the hospital and my family and friends, who support me along the way.
